Start The New Year Off Right: Commercial HVAC Service Suggestions
Easy Maintenance Now Translates Into Big Savings Later
The fact is that even the best HVAC equipment requires regular service. To ignore these tasks is to risk later equipment breakdowns. Even worse, a commercial unit that hasn’t been maintained properly may still work, but with a severe reduction in energy efficiency. The end result? You may be paying far more in energy bills than necessary. And who wants to do that?
The good news is that you can often preserve your equipment and keep your utility bills low simply by following a few easy tips.
Don’t Go Crazy with Your Thermostat.
It’s never a good idea to run your thermostat at its highest or lowest settings. You won’t heat or cool your commercial building any faster, and actually will put a huge strain on your system. Rather, program consistent, sensible temperatures into your thermostat to avoid unnecessary wear and tear. The Consumer Energy Center reports than for each degree you lower the temp between 60-70, you’ll actually save up to 5% in heating costs. Studies show most people prefer an indoor temp around 68 degrees as ideal during the winter. In the summer, the Department of Energy suggests a temperature around 78 degrees to keep folks comfortable. Whatever your choice, pushing your HVAC system to extremes on either end are never helpful, and in many cases can cause undue equipment stress.
Ensure Your Indoor Vents and Outdoor Unit Are Clutter Free.
Many times our technicians report that what is initially described as a faulty condenser or poorly functioning furnace is really just furniture, boxes, or other workplace detritus blocking indoor or outdoor HVAC equipment. Heat can’t circulate if a sofa is jammed up against a wall vent. Your air conditioner will not function effectively with outdoor furniture blocking the condenser unit. A regular walkabout to ensure safe, unfettered operation of your HVAC system is always recommended.
When Did You Last Change Your Filters and Clean Vents?
Any commercial building environment can have enough indoor pollutants to clog up filters and vents. Dirt, pollen, and even mold can quickly render your system ineffective, as well as spread bacteria, breathing irritants or worse. Don’t risk sick building syndrome with an HVAC system that has gone unattended for far too long. Consider changing out your filters and cleaning vents regularly to prevent what can become serious health problems for your tenants or employees. Our heating and air conditioning specialists can help you determine the best practices for your particular HVAC system.
It’s easy to forget about HVAC if it seems to be working properly. Don’t wait for equipment failure or a funny smell to alert you to a problem. Follow these simple maintenance tips instead, for peak performance and the lowest energy bills possible.
