You Probably Already Know That You Should Change Your HVAC Filters Regularly, But Do You Know Why You Should?
Your central air conditioning and heating works quietly behind the scenes during cooler weather to keep your home comfortable. One component in that system, the air filter, is a small yet critical part that keeps the system working effectively. And while most homeowners know it’s important to change the filter, they might not be aware of just how important the act of regularly changing the filter is to the overall health of the system and the comfort of home occupants.
Here are the primary reasons why changing filters should not be neglected:
A clean filter means a clean system. When the air filter gets dirty, it means the surface space of the filter is full and it can’t collect more dirt. The overflow goes directly into your furnace system. Buildup on the furnace’s components can lead to increased wear and tear on the system, and in the worst of scenarios, lead to furnace replacement.
A clean filter allows sufficient airflow. Airflow is critical to the life of a furnace. Without enough airflow, increased pressure builds up within the furnace and the air handler’s motor has to work double time to push conditioned air out. If this motor burns out, you’ll have to replace the entire system.
A clean filter helps a system to operate efficiently. When a filter is dirty and there’s buildup in the furnace, the system has to work harder to produce the same amount of heat than if it were clean.
A clean filter increases energy savings. When a filter protects the system from dirt buildup, it can operate at peak efficiency and use less energy, and that efficiency inevitably shows up on your energy bills.
A clean filter helps to decrease pollution. When you change your filter regularly so your system can consume less energy, you’re contributing to a cleaner environment.
