Air conditioner, Service and Maintenance

As the days grow longer and temps start getting hotter, your air conditioner needs attention. A little prep now will keep it running at peak performance, using as little energy as possible. Here’s a brief “cheat sheet” on what you can do to get ready for perfect indoor comfort, all summer long.

First, schedule a maintenance check-up. A certified technician can inspect and tune-up your system to keep it operating efficiently. This includes cleaning or replacing air filters, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting ductwork for leaks, and lubricating all moving parts.

Next, clean off the exterior unit.  After winter storms, outdoor condensers can accumulate dirt, branches  and other debris, all of which  hinder airflow and reduce energy efficiency. Use a garden hose if you need to in order to gently wash away any buildup on the condenser, and check to make sure nothing has fallen inside. Trim back any bushes around the unit to keep air flowing.

Now is the time to inspect your air ducts: With wind and rain outside blowing like crazy, all kinds of dust, dirt and other debris can get into your home’s air ducts, reducing indoor air quality and also hindering airflow. We’ve talked about duct cleaning scams in this space, but consider having a professional HVAC specialist take a look at your ductwork at least once a year, particularly if you’ve remodeled or repainted during that time.

Check your thermostat. Take a look at your existing settings in preparation for warmer weather.  If you have a programmable model, calibrate it to reflect your family’s summer schedule and temp preferences. If you don’t have one, think about upgrading to a smart thermostat now.  It’s an inexpensive way to cut utility bills, save on energy and get indoor comfort right for you and your family.

Run, don’t walk to replace your air filters. We know you know. But dirty air filters restrict airflow and force your HVAC system to work harder than it otherwise needs to, leading to higher energy bills and greater overall wear and tear. Check your air filters regularly. Here in the Southland, make a point of replacing them as needed, usually every 1-3 months.

Have your HVAC tech inspect insulation. The right  insulation is mission critical for maintaining comfortable temperatures and energy efficiency in your home.Your HVAC professional will inspect insulation around doors, windows, and ductwork for any signs of damage or wear. Replacing or repairing insulation as needed will save you money on energy bills and keep you cooler throughout the summer.

Test the system. Before the heat of summer arrives, test your HVAC  to make sure it’s operating properly. Turn on your air conditioner and monitor the airflow and temperature throughout your home. If you notice any issues like uneven cooling or strange noises, now is the time to contact a professional for further inspection and repairs.

Think about necessary upgrades.  If your HVAC system is older than 10 years or already costing you extra in terms of energy bills or repairs, it may be time to consider upgrading to a newer, more energy-efficient model. This isn’t an extravagance. Newer systems not only provide better performance and comfort but also provide significant energy savings. That will translate into lower utility bills right away.

Summer heat is no joke in the Southland. Follow the steps above to get your HVAC system ready to tackle whatever temps the summer brings. You’ll  be keeping your home comfortable and energy-efficient all season long.
