Invest Your IRS Check In A Heat Pump, And Enjoy The Return For Years To Come
When that IRS tax refund check comes in, it can be tempting to spend that sudden cash influx on something fun or frivolous. You may very well deserve a quick vacation or a new big-screen TV. However, if you make a more sensible choice and divert that tax check to a new heat pump for your home, you’ll save enough money on your utility bills to regularly afford some of life’s little luxuries.
Heat pumps are extremely efficient producers of heating and cooling for your home. For example, they can reduce the amount of money you spend on heating by 30-40 percent. Savings of this level can quickly add up, which means a heat pump can pay for itself in a relatively short time just by the savings it provides on utility bills.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), air-source heat pumps can produce much more heat energy than the electrical energy they consume–up to three times as much. This sounds like an impossibility of physics, but it happens because heat pumps do not burn combustible fuel to produce heat. Instead, they do what their name suggests: They “pump” or move heat from place to place. In the winter, they capture heat from even cold outdoor air and move it inside to warm your house. In the summer, they remove heat from the interior of your house and disperse it to the outdoor air.
When looking for a heat pump, pay close attention to the unit’s efficiency ratings. The Heating Season Performance Factor (HSPF) refers to heating efficiency, while Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) indicates the unit’s cooling efficiency. Look for an Energy Star-certified unit with an HSPF of at least 7.7 and a SEER between 14 and 18.
