Attic Insulation Plus Ventilation: A Winning Combination
Attic Insulation Plus Ventilation: A Winning Combination
You might have already heard about how important it is to have attic insulation, but it’s equally important to have enough ventilation in the attic as well. The combination of insulation and ventilation in the attic will increase the energy efficiency of your house and prevent moisture damage.
Attic Insulation
The attic is an unconditioned area, which means that the air in the space is not heated in the winter or cooled in the summer. Attic insulation acts as a barrier between your conditioned areas and your unconditioned attic. Without insulation, your heated indoor air will escape into the attic, making it harder for your heater to keep your home warm. During summer days, the hot air inside your attic will drift down and spread throughout your home, causing your air conditioner to work even harder to keep your indoor temperature at comfortable levels.
Loose-fill insulation that is blown into the attic using specialized equipment is the most common. Installers will cover all the nooks and crannies of the attic. Don’t forget to also insulate your attic door.
Attic Ventilation
Adequate ventilation in the attic will prolong the life of attic insulation and ward off moisture buildup. Excessive moisture can significantly reduce the R-value of attic insulation, which reduces the overall energy efficiency of the house. Water vapor can also become condensed in the rafters, causing damage.
You can achieve natural ventilation in the attic by ensuring that there are vents, or openings, in the attic area that are not blocked by attic insulation. These vents will let in fresh air, which pushes out the hot air and excess moisture. This will protect your rafters and roof shingles from the damaging effects of moisture buildup.
Generally, you’ll need one square foot of vent for every 300 square feet of attic space. Your attic vents should be located at various areas on the roof for maximum air circulation. Some attics might benefit from electrically powered vents — talk with an expert to see if you need them.
