Map Out a Long-Term Energy Savings Strategy for Your Pasadena Home
At a time when energy costs are unpredictable, it is important to have an energy savings strategy for your home. Not only will this save you money on your utility bills over the long term, but it will also provide you and your family with a more comfortable home and help the environment at the same time.
Having an energy savings strategy does not mean that you have to sacrifice comfort. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, half of all energy costs in the home are associated with heating and cooling. Here in Southern California, heating costs may not be as extreme as other parts of the country, but we still have to be concerned about air conditioning in the summertime.
There are a number of simple and low cost steps that you can take as part of your energy savings strategy. Keep these in mind if you want to have an immediate impact on your energy usage:
- Change indoor air quality air filters on a regular basis: A dirty air filter slows down the flow of air through the system, reducing its efficiency. The filter on your HVAC equipment should be checked once a month and changed at least every three months.
- Keep your HVAC equipment tuned up: Maintaining your equipment for optimal performance will ensure energy savings over the long term. Make sure that electrical connections are tightened, moving parts are lubricated, and that evaporator and condenser air conditioning coils are clean.
- Install a programmable thermostat: Take control of your energy usage by using pre-programmed settings for your thermostat. Use less energy during the times you are at work or the kids are at school.
- Seal heating and cooling ducts: Leaks within the duct system of your home can waste a large amount of energy. Sealing and insulating these ducts can improve the performance of your system by as much as 20 percent.
