The Programmable-Thermostat: Your Energy-Saving Ally From Dawn Through Dusk

Nothing cuts down on your energy costs like a programmable thermostat. If you often, or even occasionally, forget to adjust the thermostat during times you will be away from home or asleep, you could be throwing away hundreds of dollars every year on wasted energy. The programmable thermostat is your ally when it comes to fighting high bills because it will shoulder the responsibility of adjusting the temperature for you.

There are many makes and models of these thermostats for you to choose from, but it is important to buy one that reflects your HVAC setup, as well as your lifestyle. If, for example, your home has individual heating and cooling units, you will need a different type of programmable thermostat than if you only run one unit. Another scenario might be an HVAC system that is divided into zones. Know your type before you buy.

Your family’s lifestyle will determine what type of program you require, based on the times you are typically home or away. These are the three most common types:

  1. 7-day program – This will allow you to enter a different schedule for each day of the week. If you are home at different times every day due to children’s commitments or maybe a varied work schedule, a 7-day program is what you need.
  2. 5+2-day program – This type of thermostat allows you to have one set schedule during the week and one for the weekend, and is best for families that follow the same routine all week.
  3. 5+1+1-day program – If you need a unit that will allow you to stick to one schedule Monday-Friday and a different one for Saturday or Sunday, this is the model for you.
